Traffic Sources
The Traffic Sources tab on your Dashboard breaks down how visitors are finding your website. Knowing where your visitors come from helps you understand which marketing channels are worth your time and budget.
Source Categories
Knock Knock automatically groups your visitor traffic into the following categories:
| Source | Description |
|---|---|
| Direct | Visitors who typed your website address directly into their browser or used a bookmark |
| Organic Search | Visitors who found you through a search engine like Google or Bing (not through paid ads) |
| Google Ads | Visitors who clicked on one of your Google Ads campaigns |
| Visitors who came from Facebook, including both organic posts and paid ads | |
| Visitors who came from LinkedIn, including posts, articles, and ads | |
| Referral | Visitors who clicked a link to your site from another website |
Traffic source detection happens automatically. You do not need to set up any special tracking links for these categories to work, though using UTM parameters in your campaign links will improve accuracy.
What You Can Learn
For each traffic source, you can see:
- Visitor count -- How many people came from that source during the selected date range.
- Engagement rate -- What percentage of visitors from that source interacted with your widget.
- Lead count -- How many visitors from that source became leads.
- Trends over time -- Whether traffic from that source is increasing or decreasing compared to a previous period.
Making Decisions with Traffic Data
Here are a few ways to put this data to work:
Identify your best channels
If Organic Search is sending you the most engaged visitors who convert into leads at the highest rate, that tells you your content and SEO efforts are paying off. Double down on what works.
Spot underperforming campaigns
If Google Ads is driving a lot of visitors but very few are engaging with your widget or becoming leads, you might need to adjust your ad targeting or landing pages.
Discover unexpected sources
Sometimes a Referral source you did not expect -- like a blog post or partner website -- sends highly qualified traffic. The Traffic Sources tab helps you find these opportunities.
Combine traffic source data with the Conversions tab to see not just where visitors come from, but which sources produce the most conversions. A channel with fewer visitors but a higher conversion rate can be more valuable than one with high volume and low engagement.
Connecting the Dots
Traffic source information is also visible in other parts of Knock Knock:
- Live Sessions -- Each active visitor in Live Sessions shows their traffic source, so you can prioritize outreach based on where they came from.
- Lead Profiles -- When a lead is captured, their traffic source is saved with their profile in the Leads section.
- Hot Leads -- The Hot Leads tab factors traffic source into its scoring, so visitors from high-intent channels may score higher.
Traffic source data depends on how visitors arrive at your site. If a visitor uses a privacy-focused browser that blocks referrer information, their source may show as Direct even if they came from a link elsewhere.
